5-HTP

What is it? (physiology and clinical effects)
An essential amino acid and the precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin has been shown to improve mood, sleep, pain, and decrease inflammation.

Clinically relevant conditions:
  1. Depression
  2. Insomnia
  3. PMS
  4. Food cravings (carbohydrates)
  5. Acute and Chronic Pain (migraine headaches)
  6. Fibromyalgia
  7. Obesity
Food Sources:
Fish, turkey, chicken, beef, eggs, peanuts, soybeans, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds Risk factors and symptoms of deficiency: (who is likely deficient) Deficiency of serotonin within the brain of depressed individuals. Low levels of tryptophan in the blood lead to reduced serotonin and melatonin synthesis in the brain.

Recommended dosage: (how much usually taken)
50-100 mg tid on empty stomach

Contraindications: (side effects / precautions / interactions / drug interactions)
Digestive upset, headaches, sleepiness if taken in large amounts. Signs of overdose include muscle pain, nausea, vomiting Do not take in conjunction with pharmaceutical antidepressant, antianxiety, or other psychiatric medications.
